Sure to bring a smile to your face, 2022 The Sage Chardonnay is all about power, grace and joy. These 1979 vines at Dutton Ranch have deep roots that performed admirably in 2022, retaining freshness in the grapes through the heat spikes. The power of the warm finale to the vintage is on display with exotic lemon curd and brioche notes, but our restrained and classic winemaking kept things in balance, bringing vibrant acidity and huge aromatics. Medium-to-full bodied, the lush texture makes the deep flavors echo through a long, smooth finish, with nothing out of place.
Coming from Dutton Ranch’s Sullivan Vineyard, planted in 1979 to old Wente clone of Chardonnay, the 2022 Chardonnay The Sage pours a yellow/golden hue. It’s expressive and ripe in the glass, with aromas of honeyed citrus, brûléed golden apples, crushed stones, sweet spice, and luxurious layers. It’s lush and full-bodied, with a custardy texture and a long-lasting finish. There’s a lot of freshness and clarity in its richness, and it retains refreshing acidity. In the cellar, it was aged for 11 months in 40% new French oak, and five barrels were produced. It’s a superb and opulent wine to enjoy over the coming 8-10 years.
