Dr. Tom Kenefick purchased these beautiful acres in 1981 and 1982, which wrap around the hillsides southeast of Calistoga, and has been farming them since. This is some of the youngest soil in Napa Valley, largely comprised of decomposed volcanic rock and stones which have tumbled down Symmons Canyon and were washed over the millennia into alluvial galets roulées, known as Cortina soils. This soil is extremely well-drained, and perfect for growing red grapes in Napa Valley. Our blocks at Kenefick Ranch are located across Pickett Road from the old Eisele Vineyard and the Alfred Frediani Vineyard. We work with Cabernet Sauvignon Clones 7 and 191 here as the foundation of Artefact beginning in 2011. In 2019, we began working with a mature block of Petit Verdot to blend with the Cabernet.
